A "trigger" is a device, usually a transducer, that picks up the vibration from an instrument being struck and transmits that "information" or voltage to a sound generator. The sound generator then plays an analog (synthesizer) or digital (sample) voice. Any sound can be "triggered" from any instrument being struck.
The advantages of triggering acoustic drums are a variety of high quality sounds available at the touch of a button that never go out of tune. This is also a very affordable way of recording or playing live as you do not need an expensive microphone for each drum and the corresponding expensive processing gear to get a good sound i.e., noise gates, compressors, parametric equalizers, multi-channel mixing board, and effects (reverb, etc.,).
The advantages of triggering with electronic drums and cymbals would be a variety of high quality sounds (exact acoustic instruments) available at the touch of a button that never go out of tune. This is also a very affordable way of recording or playing live as you do not need an expensive microphone for each drum and the corresponding expensive processing gear to get a good sound i.e., noise gates, compressors, parametric equalizers, multi-channel mixing board, and effects (reverb). Also, the low acoustic volume of electronic drums and cymbals allows the player to practice at times and in places that would otherwise be prohibitive because of the loud volume of acoustic drums.
